      The new Palestine (Ill.) Art Center opens Saturday with an exhibit featuring some of the best artists in the region.

      Five area art guilds will be represented in the grand opening showcase.

      Participating guilds include Wabash Valley Art Guild (Terre Haute), Sullivan Art Guild, Northwest Territory Art Guild (Vincennes), Effingham (Ill.) Art Guild, and Palestine Art Guild.

      A wine and cheese reception for the artists and invited guests will conducted today. The exhibit opens to the public from noon to 4 p.m. daily through April 8.

      Admission to the art exhibit is free. The art center, at 110 S. Main St., is the cornerstone of the Palestine Artist Relocation Project.

      The Swope Art Museum announces a call for entries for the 63rd Annual Wabash Valley Juried Exhibition.

      The exhibit is open to all living artists working in any media who reside in Indiana or within a 150-mile radius of Terre Haute. More than $5,000 in awards will be distributed.

      This year's juror is David Edgar, a featured artist in the Swope's 2006 North American Exhibition of Paper and Plastics Art and an associate professor of art and director, MA of the Arts Administration Program at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Edgar works in a wide range of materials and has exhibited for more than 30 years. His artwork is represented nationally.

      Entries for the 63rd Annual Wabash Valley Juried Exhibition must be submitted in slide or digital CD format only.

      The Swope no longer will accept hand-delivered works of art. Entries must be post-marked by April 7.
