Ethel Beach
I was born in Terre Haute in 1948, and attended "Laboratory School"
I have been a hairstylist for 32 years. I was drawing as far back as I remember. I was always receiving the dreaded paint-by-number sets (hated those), and have loved sketching or drawing; usually forms or people -- not anyone in particular. But, when I was 13, using oil paints from a paint-by-number set and a canvas covered piece of cardboard, I prepared my first painting - it was of my father, who had passed away the previous year. I was setting in the back of a pickup truck at Deming Park, while the rest of my family played and picnicked. As the painting started taking shape, I was hooked!
During the Fall Semester of 1993, I completed a woodcarving class at Indiana State University taught by Professor Gates.
As a self-taught artist, I have learned that I truly enjoy setting and painting what I feel (dreamlike images -- I've had them described). I feel lost in that; although I do portraits for myself or with commission from others, rewarding as it can be, I do feel a bit confined to limiting my feelings in the need to paint a specific image.
I am a member of Arts Illiana, and the Wabash Valley Art Guild.
