Egg Nest

Carol Gabany

Having come to egg art via a bit of a circuitous route, I have become hooked. I was first exposed to emu egg carving four years ago at the Indiana Gourd Society annual show. An avid gourd artist at the time, I met an artist, Rob Ghio, who did both gourd and emu egg art and often incorporated carved emu egg shells in his gourd work. He in turn put me in contact with Gary LeMaster, the publisher of an egg art newsletter, The Eggshell Sculptor. Because of both of these gentlemen, I have since concentrated on working with eggs.

I work with tiny finch eggs as well as pheasant, duck, goose, rhea, emu and Ostrich eggs. Having explored egg decorating, beading, carving and, now, etching, I find I am most intrigued with carving and etching. I especially like working with ostrich and emu eggs. I like the ostrich egg because its size affords a larger surface area to work with and the emu egg because it has three distinct layers to incorporate into the finished carved product.
