Tom Makosky

Tom Makosky showcases a variety of chip carved pieces, including boxes, coasters, cheeseboards, etc. He has mastered this rarely done craft through the self-taught process of experimentation and experience. The intricate patterns are originally designed by Tom, as each cut is executed by hand.

Each piece begins as Tom designs a one-of-a-kind pattern using compass, straight edge and pencil. Then Tom decides which pieces to chip away using a specially designed knife. Following this, the piece is stained and finished with a three coats of polyurethane. Then the boxes are provided with a lining. After this process, every piece is truly original.

Tom’s craft has been recognized by the Arts Illiana Terre Haute Street Fair Artists’ Choice Award. His works have been featured in several juried Art and Craft Fairs throughout the Midwest. He now demonstrates chip carving at Billie Creek Village. Tom is associated with Raven Art Gallery in Terre Haute, Indiana and is a member of the National Wood Carvers Association and the Wabash Valley Wood Carvers Club. He is also a member of Arts Illiana and the Wabash Valley Art Guild.
